UGG platform boots went viral a few years ago, but are they actually worth buying and, more importantly, am I still wearing mine now that the initial hype has died down? After buying both the UGG Classic Mini Platform and Classic Ultra Mini Platform with my own money to compare them, I can give you a much better long-term review than when I first wrote this article. I’m 5’2″, so I love a good platform for cheating some extra height while still getting the comfort of a flat boot. I ultimately kept the Classic Mini Platform in Chestnut after discovering that sizing down gave me the best fit, and I still own and wear them several winters later. In this UGG platform boots review, I’m comparing the Classic Mini vs Ultra Mini Platform, including sizing, comfort, the differences between the two styles, how I wear mine and whether I think platform UGGs are still worth buying.

UGG platform boots review: My verdict after owning both
I originally ordered both the UGG Classic Mini Platform Boot in Chestnut and the UGG Classic Ultra Mini Platform Boot because visually there isn’t a huge difference between them, but there are a few differences that matter when it comes to fit and actually wearing them.
I’d read quite a few negative reviews of the Ultra Mini before ordering, particularly about them being difficult to get on and slipping off the heel while walking. They were definitely a wiggle to get on, but I personally didn’t have a problem walking in them once they were on.
The Classic Mini Platform has a slightly taller shaft, which I prefer both aesthetically and for wearing with pants. That’s ultimately the style I kept, and the fact that I still wear mine in winter several years later is probably the best indication of whether I think they were worth buying.
I also still prefer UGGs in Tan or Chestnut over black. I own a ton of black boots already, and the Chestnut gives me that classic cozy UGG look while being easy to style with most of my casual Fall/Winter wardrobe.
Are UGG platform boots still in style?
Yes. UGG platform boots are still relevant, although I wouldn’t describe them as a brand-new trend anymore. They’ve moved beyond that initial viral moment and become much more of an established casual Fall/Winter boot.
The Ultra Mini in particular became hugely popular after celebrities including Bella Hadid, Gigi Hadid, Jennifer Lopez, Elsa Hosk, Jennifer Garner, Kendall Jenner and Joan Smalls were spotted wearing UGGs. The appeal makes sense. They’re warm, comfortable and relatively accessible compared with a lot of the designer boots celebrities wear.
For me, the more important test is whether I still reach for mine now that they’re no longer a novelty, and I do, especially in winter. I think that makes them much easier to recommend than if mine had disappeared into the back of my closet once the trend peaked. UGG also continues to sell the Classic Ultra Mini Platform as part of its current platform collection, so this isn’t a discontinued trend that you’re buying into too late.

I’m 5’2”, so I love a good platform for cheating some height but still having the comfort of a flat, so of course I wanted to jump on this trend but I’d read so many bad reviews on the ultra mini. UGG Classic Mini Platform vs Ultra Mini Platform
If you’re trying to decide between the UGG Classic Mini Platform and Ultra Mini Platform, the biggest difference is the shaft height.
Both styles have approximately the same 2-inch platform, but the Classic Mini has an approximately 5-inch shaft versus approximately 3.5 inches on the Ultra Mini. The Ultra Mini also has a more asymmetrical topline, whereas the Classic Mini is straighter across the top.
That difference sounds small, but I personally prefer the Classic Mini. One of the things I like more about the Mini versus the Ultra Mini is that the extra length works better with pants and gives me a little more coverage in winter.

The Ultra Mini was also more of a wiggle for me to get on. Once it was on, though, I found it comfortable to walk in and didn’t personally experience the heel-slipping problem I’d seen mentioned in reviews.
UGG Classic Mini Platform boots sizing: Do they run big or small?
In my experience, the UGG Classic Mini Platform boots run big. I originally ordered my normal size, but they were too big, so I ordered the next full size down. Sizing down worked and gave me the right fit, and that’s the pair I ultimately kept. That’s worth knowing because this style comes in whole rather than half sizes. Sizing reviews can be mixed because everyone’s feet are different, but based on my personal experience, I’d try sizing down if your normal size feels too loose rather than assuming that’s how they’re meant to fit.
For the UGG Classic Ultra Mini Platform, I also went down a full size to a size 6 to get the right fit. They were a wiggle to get on, but once my feet were actually inside, the fit was perfect.

UGGs are traditionally designed to be worn without socks so that your feet are directly against the soft lining to maximize the warmth and cushioning of the sheepskin. The footbed can then mold to the shape of your foot and provide arch support. I normally wear mine without socks unless it’s particularly cold or I’m wearing them to and from a hot yoga class. UGG boots are designed to be worn barefoot to maximize the warmth and cushioning of the sheepskin.

Are UGG Classic Mini Platform boots comfortable?
Yes. One of the things I’ve always loved most about UGG boots is how comfortable, soft and warm they are, and I find the Classic Mini Platforms really comfortable now that I have the right size. They’re like walking on clouds when they’re new and the lining is still super fluffy. I always have cold feet, so I also appreciate how warm UGGs keep them during winter.
The platform gives me approximately 2 inches of extra height without having to wear an actual heel, which is obviously a bonus at 5’2″.
My biggest practical issue when I first bought them was driving. I don’t personally feel safe driving in platforms, which made me question how much wear I’d realistically get from a casual running-errands boot. I even wondered whether they were going to become just expensive house shoes.
Several winters later, that clearly didn’t happen. I still own and wear the Classic Mini Platforms, especially in winter. I just don’t drive in them if I don’t feel comfortable doing so.
UGG Classic Mini Platform boots details
The Classic Mini Platform combines the familiar UGG suede upper and soft UGGplush lining with a chunky platform sole.

I find the heel pull tab particularly useful with this style because getting your foot into a snug UGG can take a little more effort than slipping into a regular ankle boot.
UGG has also used lower-impact materials in elements of its Classic construction, including sugarcane-derived EVA in some outsoles. I would keep this as a supporting product detail rather than a major reason to buy the boots.
How to care for UGG platform boots
Classic suede UGG platform boots aren’t the shoes I’d choose for heavy rain or slushy winter weather. Suede marks easily, and the Chestnut color in particular is something I want to keep looking clean.
I recommend protecting them before wearing them outside and following the care instructions for suede rather than waiting until they’re already stained.
UGG makes its own All Gender Care Kit, which includes products specifically intended for its footwear. If you already own a suede protector, check that it’s suitable for the specific material and color before spraying the entire boot. I always think it’s worth testing anything like that on a less visible area first.
Are UGG platform boots worth it?
For me, yes. When I first bought them, I genuinely wasn’t sure whether I was going to wear them enough to justify keeping them. I was worried about driving in the platform, and because they’re such a casual boot I wondered whether I’d be better off buying UGG slippers instead.
Several years later, I still own and wear my Classic Mini Platforms, especially during winter, so they definitely weren’t just a viral purchase for me. They’re warm, comfortable and easy to throw on, while the platform gives me some extra height and makes them feel more fashion-forward than the original flat Classic UGGs. The Chestnut color also works with pretty much everything in my casual Fall/Winter wardrobe. I wear them with loungewear, leggings, sweater dresses, knit sets and jumpsuits.
I wouldn’t buy them expecting an all-weather winter boot, and if you don’t like platforms or need shoes you can comfortably drive in, those are genuine drawbacks to consider. But if you already like the warmth and comfort of classic UGGs and want a chunkier silhouette with some extra height, I think they’re worth it.

How to style platform UGGs
I treat my platform UGGs as casual Fall/Winter boots rather than trying to dress them up too much.
My easiest outfits are leggings with an oversized sweater or jacket, knit sets, loungewear and sweater dresses. I also like them with skinny jeans and fitted pants because the chunkier platform balances a slimmer leg.
For looser jeans and trousers, I prefer letting the pants fall over the boots rather than trying to stuff lots of fabric inside them.
Because I chose Chestnut, I particularly like them with cream, camel, beige, chocolate brown, black and denim. The warm neutral color is one of the reasons they’ve been so easy to keep wearing year after year.
Should Uggs be worn tucked in or worn over trousers | How to Style UGG Boots The Right Way
Whether you tuck your pants into your UGG boots or wear them over the top depends much more on the style of your pants than what generation you’re from, despite some of the articles that have suggested otherwise.
For tighter-fitting styles such as leggings, skinny jeans, joggers or tights, I tuck them into the boots. Obviously you’re not exactly going to pull your tights over your UGGs!
One of the reasons I prefer the Classic Mini to the Ultra Mini is that I think its slightly taller shaft works better over fitted pants, leggings, and jeans.
For looser styles such as wide-leg jeans and sweatpants, I normally wear the pants over the boots. Depending on the pants, you can also play around with exposing more of the boot rather than creating a bulky balloon of fabric around the ankle.
There are obviously exceptions. If it’s wet outside and you’re trying to stop your trousers dragging through puddles, practicality wins. Wear them whichever way works best for your outfit.
