The black knit dress we’re loving right now & how we’re styling them this season
Black sweaters are one of those perennial classics I can never seem to have enough of. Case in point all of the photos of my black knit dresses collection below. It’s a sweater dress style that goes with pretty much all of your shoes and boots, is easy to dress up and down and one of the most if not the most flattering colors around. So if you’re shopping for the best black sweater dresses this Winter or even a black and white sweater dress, check out these cute styles. From designer to luxe for less looks under $100, minis, midis, maxis, sexy to turtleneck sweater dresses and everything in between.

Are black sweater dresses still in style
Yes black sweater dresses are in style. While they’re a wardrobe staple and classic style, this winter look for bodycon or cable knit styles. As seen at Givenchy, Burberry, Balenciaga, Tod’s and Chanel.

What do you wear with sweater dresses on your legs
This really comes down to the season and occasion. For Fall and Spring I tend to wear them with bare legs and then transition to tights or even leggings as it gets colder. I love patterned tights like Gucci or Valentino’s for adding extra interest to a simple black dress.
What kind of shoes go with a sweater dress
Shoe wise more casual styles look great with loafers, sneakers, chunky ankle boots, or flat knee high boots. The dressier the style, like the crystal one below, the dressier you can go with footwear. However, rules are made to be broken and sometimes a juxtaposition can be fun too.

How do you wear black sweater dresses
I did a whole article on sweater dress outfit ideas but some black sweater dress ideas include:
The statement outfit
Style your plain black sweater dress over logo or patterned tights with black stiletto heels for an on trend look for 2023.
Play with textures
If you don’t want to splurge on designer tights another option is to have fun with your footwear. Like this faux snakeskin ankle boots styled with a maxi dress. If you’re going for a long black sweater dress, look for a leg slit so that you can see more of your boots.
Winter black sweater outfit
For extra warmth layer a turtleneck black sweater dress over black leggings and boots for a sleek monochromatic look.
Office appropriate outfit
Try a short sleeve black knit dress whether that’s a mini, midi or maxi over a white shirt for a crisp and polished look.
Go glam
Don’t think sweater dresses have to be casual. Look for more fitted styles or ones with button detailing for a more sophisticated and dressy look. Just add heels or heeled knee high boots to complete the look and make it date night ready.
Add a belt to create shape
If the waistline’s lacking definition or you just want to add your own personal style to an outfit try adding a belt. Ok, this dress is not technically black it’s a black and white sweater dress but since that’s a trending color combination this season I wanted to share some more options with you.

The black sweater dresses I’m eyeing this season
I’ve already added quite a few this season including my new favorite short black turtleneck sweater dress that’s made of super plush Chenille fabric. The luxe texture makes it so easy to dress up to take it from day to night.

I tried to stop myself adding too many Balmain dresses but there are so many chic iterations out there this season for a really elevated wardrobe basic that’s feminine and flattering.

If some of the styles don’t have enough shape or aren’t fitted enough for you, try adding a belt to give it more structure and more of a waistline. Plus it helps to add interest and can completely change the aesthetic.

Shop the best long black sweater dresses
I tended to wear short sweater dresses in the past but have added more midi and long black sweater dresses to my closet this season. As I finally found some styles that didn’t need hemming on my petite frame.
These are some of the best styles I came across including this bodycon button down style. If it’s cardigan dresses you’re looking for, I did a whole separate article on those. Like I said, I have a thing for sweater dresses!
There’s definitely some cross over between the midi and maxi black knit dresses. So definitely check out both carousels if you’re looking for a longer length style. Especially as the length will vary depending on your height.
Shop the best black midi sweater dresses
Black midi sweater dresses can be a more difficult length to pull off but they’re also one of the most versatile and puddle proof. Style them with everything from pumps to knee high boots and layer up as needed.

Shop the best mini black sweater dresses
This is my go to length for black knit dresses. I’m not sure if it’s more to avoid the hemming issue or just because it’s what I’m used to. I also have a thing for knee high boots and over the knee boots and this length shows them off the most.

I’ve also added some black and white sweater dresses as it’s a color trend this Winter. Whether that’s houndstooth, stripes or the trim. It’s such a classic and makes a change from solid black if you’re looking to change things up.
