If you don’t have a pair of trending square heels here’s what you’re missing!
Square heels AKA spool heels were always something I thought of as just a trend. I didn’t realize how much I actually needed these practical pyramid heels until I had them. I’d always just struggled at events on grass or unstable surfaces. I’m not talking about block-heels or chunky-heel shoes, but sculptural narrow heels that end in a square. Open toe, square heel mules are the perfect heels for semi-formal events like horse racing, garden parties, polo matched or outdoor galas. Because you’re definitely not catching me in kitten heels or flats at any of those. Neither of those styles do me any favors and square heels mean I can keep both my height and my footing. Here’s why you need square heels in your life and the best pairs to add to your closet.

5 reasons to love square heels
Square heels are very much still in style and way more comfortable than stilettos. Here’s why to add them to your shoe collection:
- Open toe mules with square heels are more stable than stiletto heels.
- Spool heels don’t sink into grass like stiletto heels do as they have a wider end.
- Pyramid heels tend to be more comfortable than stilettos.
- They make a fun change and are more of a statement piece.
- They look less clunky and smarter than wedges.

What are the best square heels
If you’re just looking for 1 pair, go for a white or neutral pair of square heel open toe mules that will go with as many of your outfits as possible. Unless you’re just looking for a pair for a certain event and already have your outfit picked out, then you can play with colors.

I started with a pair of white spool heel braided mules for the summer races and then added a stunning pink satin pair for nights out when there’s lots of walking. We live in Vegas where the casinos are vast to walk around. The white ones I wore out I used them so much, so I just ordered a new nude pair for Spring/Summer.
Braided or plain leather styles look the most on trend and stylish. The trouble with clear styles is that they tend to look cheap and there’s also the issue of moisture build up in humid situations. Not cute! If you’re looking for more support and a style that won’t cut into your toes, go for a single strap style rather than super strappy styles.

How to style square heels
Square heel open toe mules tend to go with everything. Style them with:
- Blazer and shorts sets.
- Jean shorts and a camisole.
- Casual summer dresses.
- Any summer dress for the races and summer season events.
- With jeans in cooler months.
- With cocktail dresses for a fashion forward look.
- Style spool heels with your resort wear when you want a change from wedges, slides or espadrilles.

Best Nude Square Heel Mules
These super soft leather mules are one of the most versatile summer heels to slip on. They’re super soft and I find this brand runs true to size. They also come in white but they were sold out in my size.
Designer Square Heels
Hot pink continues to dominate the fashion scene. Don’t think you have to go monochromatic with this look, they work just as well with white outfits. These are sold out but Christian Louboutin has an almost identical style.

Best Formal Square Heels
How glam are these designer black satin and crystal chunky heel mules. They’re gorgeous for Fall/Winter and perfect for evenings where you know you’ll be socializing on your feet a lot or just want to be more comfortable.
My top picks
These are the square heel sandals and mules that caught my eye for this season. From casual to more dressy styles in both neutrals and trending colors.
