Boost your mood, confidence and productivity with Makeup!
The power of makeup. Is it really a thing or possible? Well, after 6 weeks of quarantine, I’m here with Missy MacKintosh and a study from the Journal of Cosmetic Science with a big Yes! But it’s the way that you look at makeup that matters when turning to makeup for confidence.
I met Missy last weekend, where we were both presenters at the Clean Beauty Virtual Summit. Missy is an internationally acclaimed Canadian Makeup Artist with over 15 years of experience. Her work has been featured in Cosmopolitan, Huffington Post, Daily Mail and she’s the founder of clean makeup line – MisMacK Clean Cosmetics. She’s a firm believer that:
Makeup Does Not Define You, It’s Merely a Tool of Empowerment.
We connected over makeup, having our own beauty brands and empowering women. I invited her onto the Best Luxury Handbags podcast as we’d both been talking about how makeup affects your mood, mindset and confidence. And it might sound crazy, but even productivity.

The power of makeup | How can makeup empower us?
I love to have days where I’m makeup free but on those days I really don’t want to run into anyone at the store and avoid the mirror. As sad and vain as that maybe, that’s the truth and makeup gives me confidence just as great heels or a great outfit does.
Not because I’m insecure, but I don’t feel put together, that I look my best or exude the confidence that makeup and a good hair day gives me. I’ve actually been doing my makeup more days than not even just to work from home because I feel more ‘me’, happier, professional and ready to go.
Apparently, I’m not alone, nor is Missy (today’s guest). A study from the Journal of Cosmetic Science on ‘Why women use makeup’ explains the power of makeup. How makeup stimulates 3 of our senses touch, smell and sight in a positive way. Inducing sensory as well as psychological pleasure. Their results also showed that makeup could support two opposite functions: “camouflage” vs “seduction.”
Missy explains more about those psychological profiles and the study in this podcast episode. As well as how to transition from the more anxious, defensive “camouflage” classification to the more sociable, assertive, and extroverted type.
The study reveals that:
“Beyond the simple application of colorful products on the face, makeup has two major functional implications depending on specific psychological profiles of women.” Journal of Cosmetic Science.
We Need to Talk About The Power of Makeup
Makeup is way more powerful than most of us realize. So why not use it to feel empowered and beautiful from within rather than thinking of it as a chore or way to camouflage. A group of women tell us why makeup is so empowering and fulfilling for them, read this makeup article which is all about the power of makeup.

The Power of Lipstick
One of the first insights into how powerful lipstick is was at a Banksy exhibition and seeing the disturbing and moving ‘The holocaust lipstick’.
It seemed so jarring and such a stark contrast seeing these prisoners behind barbed wire, deathly thin with shaved heads, wearing scarlet red lipstick! But then I read this graphic diary entry by this extremely powerful artwork.
An extract from the diary of Lieutenant Colonel Mervin Willett Gonin DSO who was among the first British soldiers to liberate Bergen-Belsen in 1945.
It was shortly after the British Red Cross arrived, though it may have no connection, that a very large quantity of lipstick arrived…I believe nothing did more for these internees than the lipstick…At last someone had done something to make them individuals again…That lipstick started to give them back their humanity.
