Dior Mascara & Maximizer 3D Lash Primer | The mistakes I was making & how to get the best results!
Dior Iconic Overcurl mascara which is designed to work with Diorshow Maximizer 3D lash primer might seem like an unnecessary luxury but do they live up to their claims. As a luxury beauty blogger who started performing on stage at age 11, I’ve had over 3 decades of trying various mascaras. So I have quite high standards expectations when it comes to luxury brand mascara’s and primer’s. While for me it’s normally the primer the lash primer that makes or breaks it for me. There are also some mascara’s worth the money and other’s to skip. I put both the Diorshow Lash Primer and Dior Diorshow Iconic Overcurl Mascara to the test. I’ve been using the mascara for about 4 months. Since it’s time to reorder I’m going to share my thoughts on whether they do what they say, if my sensitive eyes can handle them and if they’re worth it.

Dior Maximizer Mascara Primer and Diorshow Iconic Overcurl mascara review
I was making a big mistake with the application to start with on how I was using Dior Diorshow Iconic Overcurl Mascara. So I wanted to let you know my thoughts, whether I think it’s any good, some tips for getting the best results, how to apply it and whether it’s worth it or not in this Diorshow Maximizer 3D Lash Primer Triple Action Serum and Dior Diorshow Iconic Overcurl Mascara review.
Dior Diorshow 3D Mascara Primer-Serum Review – Triple Action – Volume, Curl & Definition – 24h Wear Lash Care
I’m big on lash primers, I kind of think they’re as important, if not more important than what mascara you use. Diorshow Maximizer 3D is Dior’s lash primer-serum is supposed to boost your mascaras performance and improve your lash appearance.
It also claims to make lashes seem stronger, smoother and more supple. I like the idea that it’s a conditioning formula not just makeup. I’ve been looking for more products like that more recently. I’ve also been using a lash conditioning serum, so maybe this will replace the need for that and be 2 products in 1.
Dior Maximizer mascara primer triple-action formula is supposed to add 3x the volume, 91% more curl (I curl my lashes anyway) but I’m not sure how that works as the wand isn’t curled, and 43% more length instantly for 24h. If you watch the video, I show you using the mascara both with and without the primer. So that you can see the difference it makes. I don’t necessarily notice more curl or length as the mascara already does that but it definitely adds a lot of thickness and density.

Is Dior Maximizer 3D lash primer good for sensitive eyes
If you watch my YouTube or read this blog, you’ll notice I wear sunglasses a lot. That’s because I have really sensitive eyes that stream a lot. You’ll sometimes notice from my videos, I often start with liner and end up with none as the streaming’s smudged it so by the end it’s all worn off. The Diorshow maximizer primer is supposed to be gentle on sensitive eyes and I found it caused no irritation at all (nor did the mascara).
The Diorshow Maximizer 3D has been reformulated with a new balm texture. I didn’t use the old formula so I can’t tell you the difference but it is fibrous and glides on without leaving too thick a white film. So it’s not hard to cover like some others can be.
It’s enriched with a cornflower floral extract, that’s supposed to increase the intensity and color of the mascara. The other active ingredients are berry extract and cotton nectar that help protect and coat the lashes.
Dior Diorshow Iconic Overcurl Mascara review
The Dior Iconic Overcurl Mascara comes in 5 shades (black, blue, dark green, brick (which looks like a rusty brown) and brown. I always wear black mascara as I like a more dramatic look and have very fair lashes.
I wanted to try Dior Iconic Overcurl mascara as I’ve stopped wearing false lashes so I try to find products that lengthen and add volume as much as possible. This particular Dior mascara is supposed to fan out and lengthen lashes, nourish and fortify them, and give volume and curl that lasts 24h. I can honestly say that once I was using it with their primer and not another brand it didn’t clump and the separation was great.

Can you refill Dior mascara
If you’re big on minimal waste and sustainability Diorshow mascara is Dior’s first refillable mascara. It’s also cheaper to buy as set with the mascara and the refill than to buy 2 of their mascaras.
How to get the best results from your Dior Mascara Primer and Diorshow Mascara
I’m sorry to say this, but you do really need to use both Dior products. I wasn’t using the Dior primer with their mascara to begin with and thought I didn’t like the mascara. Because it was clumping and not covering the other primers. Once I switched and used their primer the results were shocking. In a good way! The mascara didn’t clump, my lashes were super curled, long and voluminous.
When it comes to how to apply Dior mascara for the best results I’ve found these things help:
- Coat both sides of your lashes with the mascara.
- Boost and set your lash curl by pressing the brush against the upper lash line for a few seconds for an eyelash-curler effect.
- PRO TIP: If you get mascara on your skin while you’re applying it, wait until dries to wipe off with Q-Tip. That way it comes right off, rather than smudging wet product around.

Is Dior Diorshow mascara and primer worth it?
With or without the Dior mascara primer my lashes look much longer and more curled. It’s an intense, long-wearing color which isn’t just smudge-proof but near impossible to get off! I’ve found the only thing that really gets it off is Dior’s Mousse On/Off Cleanser. Of course it’s another Dior product!
So why am I paying over $30 for a mascara vs a drug store brand. Because I’ve been more intentional about buying makeup that uses mainly natural ingredients that do more than just add color.
The Dior Overcurl mascara has some of the same active ingredients as the Dior Maximizer. Namely Cornflower floral water for comfort and Cotton Nectar to fortify, smooth and make lashes shine. I haven’t noticed shiny lashes using it in all honesty but how long and curled they look is enough for me to be a convert. I’ll most definitely be repurchasing both.

Does Dior mascara primer and mascara do what they say it will
The main effect of the Dior Diorshow iconic overcurl mascara for me was lengthening, curling and obviously color but these are the other benefits Dior claims and the ones that I noticed:
- Does the primer and mascara curl them? Yes
- Does it hold the curl? That’s not something I’ve really noticed as I’ve never have a problem getting them to stay curled.
- Are they shiny? Debatable.
- Are they lengthened and fanned out? Yes.
- Does the eye with primer look like has given 3x the volume? They definitely look more voluminous.
- Does the Dior mascara primer give 91% more curl? They’re definitely curled but I couldn’t tell you a percentage.
- 43% more length instantly for 24h: You can see the length instantly but again how much exactly I have no idea but I’m happy with the results.
- Increased the intensity and color of the mascara: Because of the volume it gives, they do look blacker on the photo with the primer.
- Are they good for sensitive eyes? My eyes did great with them. Not so much with the eyeshadow I used afterwards.
- Is the Diorshow Iconic Overcurl mascara long lasting: This is one long wear mascara! I find it really hard to wash off with regular face wash even double cleansing. So you’ll either need an eye makeup remover or Dior’s cleanser.

Is Dior mascara and primer worth the money?
If you’re used to buying luxury makeup then absolutely yes. Although there’s always some ways to save money! Firstly, wait to get them in the Sephora VIB sale or buy them as a set on Dior.
When you’re shopping on Dior make sure that you’re logged in so that you can take advantage of the Dior beauty loyalty program and apply codes for free gifts with purchase (normally when you spend over $150). The Dior Diorshow Iconic Overcurl Mascara Diorshow Maximizer 3D Lash Primer gift set comes in and out of stock. So definitely keep and eye out for it and get it when you can. As it costs less to buy together as a gift set than separately.
If you know you like this mascara, get the mascara and refill set and save $10 versus buying 2 of them.
Shop the Dior makeup I used in the video and photos in this review
These are all of the Dior eyemakeup and makeup products I used in the Dior mascara video review and before and after photos. Including my favorite Capture Totale Super Potent Serum Foundation that hides fine lines better than any other foundation I’ve tried. If your lashes are already long and curly, you might prefer the Dior Buildable Volume mascara instead. So that you don’t end up with mascara on your upper eyelid.
